Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil is an ancient Hindu temple located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati. The temple dates back to the early 16th century and was founded by the great saint and acharya, Sri Kailawasanathan Swami. The temple is considered one of the most holy places for Hindu devotees in Sri Lanka.
The complex of the temple is spread across an area of 4 acres and houses several shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Ganesha and other Gods. Inside the main sanctum sanctorum lies a 5 feet tall idol of Lord Shiva carved out of black stone brought from Trichy. The walls of the inner sanctum are adorned with various murals depicting various stories related to Vishnu, Nataraja and Subrahmanya Swamy. Nearby there is also a shrine dedicated to Agastheeswara who is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Siva.
The temple attracts hundreds of devotees every day who come here to seek blessings from the Almighty. Every year during the festival season, grand celebrations are held at this temple where devotees offer poojas and perform special rituals. In addition to being a religious center, this beautiful shrine also consists of a library which contains palm leaf manuscripts related to Indian scriptures as well as several rare books about Hindu mythology.
