Gangaramaya Temple Colombo is one of the oldest and most renowned Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. Founded in the late 19th century by H. Sumangala Thera, this temple has become a symbol of religious coexistence and harmony between different faiths represented in Sri Lanka. It continues to be an important center for Sinhala Buddhist culture and tradition. Located in the very heart of Colombo, Gangaramaya temple houses numerous artifacts and sculptures that represent a variety of cultural identities and beliefs. This temple also serves as a pilgrimage site for devotees from all over the world.
The main shrine of Gangaramaya Temple is decorated with an array of ornate carvings and statues that exude beauty even after so many years have passed since it was originally built. The architecture reflects both traditional Sri Lankan styles as well as influences from India, China, Thailand and Indonesia. Inside the main hall are shrines dedicated to various deities including Gautama Buddha, Vishnu, Saman and Kataragama Deviyo (the god of war). The complex also contains a library full of books on Buddhism as well as several museums containing artifacts related to Sinhalese history, culture and traditions. Outside the main hall lies an elaborate pool surrounded by lush gardens which are used for traditional blessings during important festivities like Poya days (full moon days).
